Spirea X - Speed Reaction (4AD, 1991)

Pristine, buzzing, melodic indie pop with a West Coast tang.

Formed by former Primal Scream guitarist and songwriter, Jim Beattie, Spirea X dropped a couple of singles and an album on 4AD in 1991 and were gone.

It's the Primal Scream of 'Velocity Girl' mixed with a more widescreen sound and 'Speed Reaction' is bolstered by waves of harmony vocals, some subtle horns and a blast of energy.

Divine.

  1. The glorious unmistakeable sound of Jim Beattie's 12 string Rickenbacker. Spirea X were so much better than Primal Scream during this period and it's easy to see why Beattie had to voice his musical expression in another manner.

I saw them on SNUB TV and immediately went out and bought the first 12". Then the second and then the CD, Fireblade Skies. Having achieved what they wanted with that Jim and Judith went on to form Adventures In Stereo, but after 2K the trail goes cold.
