The Kittenbirds 'You, Me And Jesus' (Paperhouse, 1993) (mp3)

Infectious scuzz-pop from short-lived Birmingham hopefuls.

I remember seeing the Kittenbirds in a little basement venue back around the time this came out and they were utterly beguiling, most of the songs built around distorted guitar abuse like the wonderful 'You, Me and Jesus'.

Paperhouse (the label that gave us the first Teenage Fanclub album) put out two Kittenbirds singles but they then disappeared (The Kittenbirds, not Paperhouse), to what, I don't know.

'You, Me and Jesus' was Single of the Week in both the NME (when it was a real music paper...) and Melody Maker (ask yer dad). Not a surprise as it fizzes along on a wave of cheap distortion, frenetic drums and a singalong chorus about hanging out with Jesus and turning Him on to (amongst other things) French art movies and collecting flowers and - at the spoken-word breakdown - invoking the Son of God to "try some of this".

Well infectious.
