Moose 'This River Never Will Run Dry' (Hut, 1991) (mp3 download)

Quite why this wasn't the first post on the blog, I'm not really sure. Maybe that would have been too obvious...

Having fallen in love with the pure shoegaze thrills of 'Suzanne' on the 'Cool Breeze' EP, discovering this more considered side to the band was something of a surprise. A pleasant one, though, with the smeary guitar touches adding a touch of shoegaziness to the mogadon country rock feel of the track.

The arrangement and song-based approach took Moose away from the blistering angelic shoegaze of Ride and the effects-frenzy of Slowdive, trying to break out the Scene (That Celebrates Itself) in the same way that Revolver's wonderful debut album tried (and failed).

Stretching out across six minutes, brushed drums and a gorgeously languid bass set the tone against a jangle of rhythm guitar that carries the song. Curclicues of acoustic guitar pretty up the sound and judders of crunching guitar abuse balance the light with shade. Luscious.

Tip: Listen on headphones.
