New - Four Tet - 128 Harps (2012)

More refreshing newness from Four Tet

Four Tet has completely embraced music sharing mindset and unleashed a string of tracks straight onto Soundcloud over the last year or so.

'128 Harps' is the latest and it's a real treat, combining stuttering post-dubstep dancefloor action with liquid harp melodies. It somehow manages to combine chin-stroking, laid-back folktronica with sublime rhythmic dynamism.

Four Tet & Burial - Nova (Text, 2012)

Four Tet, Burial, Nova, Text Records, 2012, Dubstep, Electronica, Four Tet and Burial, mp3
Rolling Deep House through a haze of urban cold.

Another Four Tet and Burial collaboration. Maybe we can expect a full album?

Fuses dubstep bleakness with Deep House patter what sounds like Eastern atmospheric samples.

Think the Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence soundtrack remixed by Photek.

Very subdued but very intriguing. Soon come on Four Tet's Text label (TEXT013).

#Bestof2011 - SBTRKT 'Heatwave (Live at Abbey Road)' (Young Turks)

Best album of 2011. Perfect hybrid of soul and machine.

SBTRKT's debut album is my album of the year, displaying an aptitude for mind bending beats, gorgeous sequencer lines, a bit of dubby space and warm, soulful vocals.

SBTRKT released a series of very tasty records, culminating in his debut album that didn't even contain all the best tracks. Check 'Living Like I Do' for more greatness.

This live version of album-opener 'Heatwave' takes the mix of flavours/flavas even further with some delicious, chunky, almost Post Rock drumming courtesy of the masked man himself. This makes the sparkling, airy sequencer lines shine even more.

Somewhere between dubstep, postrock, looped-up electronica and house - great stuff.

Having had an mp3 of this tune removed a couple of times by our friends at the DMCA, you'll have to enjoy this otherwise unavailable track via Youtube.

Four Tet & Burial 'Moth' (Text, 2009)

Burial, Four Tet, Moth, Text Records, TEXT006, 12-inch, 2010, dubstep, electronica, mp3
Crafty slice of rhythmelodic electronica with dubstep undertones. Or is it dubstep with rhythmelodic overtones?

From the unmarked Text 12" that was snuck out to a scrum of interest prior to last year's Burial/Four Tet/Thom Yorke 12". I managed to get my hands on a copy thanks only to the benevolence of the Rough Trade West cru.

'Moth' is just a total genius record that's a perfect marriage of Burial's crunchy dubstep bleakbeats and Four Tet's crisp, flowing melodies.

Or is it a sublime confluence of Four Tet's crisp, dubstep loneliness and glitch with Burial's late-night angel vocal melody?

Who cares when a track is this good?

When Saints Go Machine 'Fail Forever (Nicolas Jaar Remix)' (Studio !K7, 2011)

Utterly and oddly compelling hybrid of styles. Is it chamber music? Dubstep? Minimal house? It's all three!

It opens with what sounds like an ice cream van tune played on pizzicato strings them glitched up. Some steel pan (I don't know, you wait twenty years for an underground dance record with a steel pan on and then two come along seemingly at once...) adds flavour before an increasingly pitch-shifted vocal makes for an unsettled mood.

The track stays spartan and reserved until some sub-bass enters the mix, locking into a tight minimal groove. Then we're treated to some chocolatey, langorous cello before we get a half-time pass at the minimal groove.

It definitely has a kinship with Jamie xx's productions but it's a highly engaging and original sound.

Jamie xx 'Far Nearer' (Nmbrs, 2011)

Jamie xx Far Nearer Nmbrs Dubstep
Can this man do no wrong?

Utterly addictive steel pan infused dubstep loveliness. It's been around as a radio rip since before Christmas but finally makes it's way onto vinyl.

Summery and melodic and of absolutely masterful rhythm.

Delicious.

New Music - SBTRKT 'Heatwave (Live at Abbey Road)' (2011) (mp3)

Awesome hybrid of electronics, loops, soulful vocals and some very tidy live drumming from producer/artist/whatever SBTRKT.

Somewhere between dubstep, postrock, Emeralds looped-up electronica and house - I'm liking this a lot.

Download SBTRKT 'Heatwave (Live at Abbey Road)' (mp3) (Mediafire) (Removed by request - which is a shame as this is a great version and a great advert for the SBTRKT album. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere now, legal or otherwise. Which is stupid IMHO.)
